Food safety training

Food businesses must make sure that staff members who handle or prepare food have adequate training.

Training can range from issuing simple guidance on food safety and personal hygiene to new members of staff, to more formal training.

Food safety and allergen awareness workshops

The council runs 1-day workshops to help food businesses comply with hygiene and food information regulations, improve hygiene ratings and protect their customers and themselves against food safety issues in the future.

Training is delivered in person by an experienced environmental health officer (EHO) and will:

  • provide you with essential advice to help permanently improve the hygiene and food safety practices of you and your staff
  • develop your knowledge of hygiene, key allergen information and controls.

Workshops are held in Uxbridge - at either the Battle of Britain Bunker, the Civic Centre or Uxbridge Adult Education Centre. Venue, dates and times are subject to confirmation and minimum attendance.

Places cost £35 per person.

Important:

  • After completing the training, you must still be able to demonstrate adequate supervision, instruction and/or training of your staff. This is best demonstrated through evidence of good practice within your business. An EHO visiting your business will not accept your or staff attendance at the workshop as evidence of compliance.
  • Workshops do not replace formal accredited training, eg Food Hygiene Level 2. Formal food hygiene training is recommended.

Accredited training

The following accreditation bodies provide a good standard of food training.

Find out more about suitable courses from your local library, further education college or contact one of the awarding bodies. An allergen awareness training video and other resources are available in multiple languages on the Charted Trading Standards Institute's website.

The Food Standards Agency also has a number of basic training videos on Youtube (opens new window).
