Apply for the 2022 Tashan Daniel bursary scheme

Tuesday 28 June 2022: Young people aspiring to succeed in sports, culture or their education are being invited to apply for the next round of funding from a local legacy bursary to help them achieve their goals.

Tashan Daniel Award
The Tashan Daniel Award is open to all Hillingdon residents, aged up to 21. Through the scheme, young people can apply for council funding, with successful applicants receiving help for sports equipment, qualifications in art and culture, vocational courses in further education, and sports training and competing opportunities (in the UK only).

The bursary was created by Hillingdon Council as a lasting memorial to keen sportsman and Hillingdon resident, Tashan Daniel, who died aged 20 following an unprovoked attack at Hillingdon Underground station in September 2019.

Young people can receive support to the maximum value of £2,000 per person, per year, and individual applications will be assessed by a panel, including a member of the Daniel family.

James Barnes, aged 14 from West Drayton, was awarded £1,012 to help him pursue his BMX racing dreams. James will be racing for Hillingdon in the London Youth Games on 3 July.

Daniel Barnes, James' father, said: "We were so pleased to have been awarded the money. The money helped us replace James' safety equipment and contributed towards his training and BMX bike. The funding meant that James could continue to follow his dreams of becoming a professional BMX rider."

Cllr Jane Palmer, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: "The Tashan Daniel Award is a really fitting legacy to commemorate the tragic loss of a young man with his life ahead of him.

"We're delighted to offer the bursary again this year and look forward to receiving many deserving applications.

"Tashan loved sports and was a passionate sprinter, with dreams of competing in the Olympic Games one day. Now, in his memory, talented young people will have the chance to get genuine support that could prove a vital stepping-stone in helping them achieve their own dreams."
