New recycling legislation for businesses
Despite many efforts to boost recycling, the UK has seen recycling rates level, and waste is expected to rise annually. New legislation will mean that it will become mandatory for organisations to have services in place to separate waste and recycling.
About simpler recycling
The new legislation (known as simpler recycling) is due to come into effect on Monday 31 March 2025 and will make it mandatory for businesses to have a recycling service in place.
When the legislation comes into force, businesses will:
- be responsible for ensuring they have access to the services needed to separate and dispose of their waste materials
- need to ensure they separate their recyclables from non-recyclables and place them in the appropriate containers.
Please note: If your organisation and its managed premises produces more than 5kg of food waste per week, you will also need to have a food waste service.
Does this affect my business?
Any organisation that falls within 1 of the following parameters must comply by Monday 31 March 2025.
- 10 or more full-time staff
- An annual turnover of £1.7 million or more
Important: Organisations that do not fall within these parameters have until 31 March 2027 to comply.
