Social Housing Allocation Policy refreshed to meet changing demand
Friday 8 November 2024: Last night, (Thursday 7 November), Hillingdon Council's Cabinet approved changes to the borough's Social Housing Allocation Policy to address the growing demand for housing support and provide a clearer framework for prioritising applications.
The key changes include:
- making the priority order for rehousing clearer
- giving increased priority to the most vulnerable residents and those who have lived in the borough for 10 years or more
- allowing more overcrowded households to bid for properties below their assessed need.
Local authorities are required to have a method of assessing housing need, advertising social housing owned by the council or Housing Associations and allocating them accordingly.
The updated policy will be implemented from 1 March 2025. Residents with existing housing register applications will be contacted by the council.
Cllr Steve Tuckwell, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Planning, Housing and Growth said: "We are determined to create safe and strong communities and prevent homelessness.
"These changes will improve our ability to distribute social housing fairly, prioritising households with long-term links to the borough and our most vulnerable residents.
"However, it's important we are transparent - demand for housing support across London has outgrown the supply of homes and the sad reality is that many residents who join our housing register could wait more than 10 years.
"If you are worried about your housing situation or feel at risk of homelessness it's vital to act immediately, don't wait until you are actually homeless to seek support. For many residents the best chance of finding a secure home is through the private rented sector. Work with us to help you access support and find an affordable property.
