Hillingdon Council marks milestone of valued centre
Thursday 15 August 2024: Hillingdon Council's Queens Walk Resource Centre, which provides valuable support to adults with learning disabilities and complex needs, celebrated its 10th anniversary on Wednesday 14 August.
Centre users, their families, along with past and present staff, celebrated the milestone with a party.
Guests enjoyed the Summer Frolics sing-a-long show performed by the Rah Rah Theatre, refreshments and games, including snakes and ladders and hook-a-duck. There was also an exhibition of artwork created by centre users, and a display on the history of Queens Walk.
Since it opened in 2014, the centre has developed a wide range of activities designed to support and encourage creativity and self-expression.
A music room with a variety of instruments helps residents improve their communication skills through music therapy, and there's an art room where users can take part in painting, drawing and crafts.
The centre's interactive room offers residents with severely limited mobility the opportunity to take part in interactive games and activities using movement-controlled software. There's also a hydrotherapy pool with sensory lighting which helps stimulate and encourage movement for those with physical disabilities.
Other facilities include a health and wellbeing room offering holistic therapies and massage, an activities studio which provides space for physical activity sessions to improve coordination and mobility, a sensory garden, and an adapted teaching kitchen where users of all abilities can learn important life skills in a fun, social environment.
Cllr Jane Palmer, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: "It was wonderful to see the celebrations for the centre's milestone anniversary with residents who benefit from our fantastic facility, their families, and our dedicated staff who work so hard to make a difference to the lives of some of our most vulnerable residents.
"We are committed to creating thriving, healthy communities and the centre helps us do that by providing valuable personalised support to residents who need it most, helping them to live healthy and active lives, as well as providing some respite for their families."
