Christmas joy for all at the bunker
Thursday 7 December, 2023: As Christmas approaches if you're looking for activities that offer a break from the grottos and German sausages, Hillingdon Council's Battle of Britain Bunker and Visitor Centre has a sack full of fun activities to entertain families and history enthusiasts alike.
The popular Pipsqueak toddler story sessions return with a Christmas special on Friday 22 December for youngsters aged 18 months to three years. It starts at 10.30am and costs £2.50. Adults (max two per child) can accompany the children and do not need a ticket.
On Sunday 10 December singer Lissie Allsop performs vintage songs from the 1940s during two 45-minutes sets at 12.30pm and 1.45pm. Entry is free with a general admission ticket to the bunker. And on Sunday 17, the RAF Halton Band will entertain guests with Christmas songs in the Visitor Centre. The concert is also free with general admission and starts at 1pm.
The unique Twilight Yoga series continues throughout December, so if you're looking to keep yourself in shape to balance out the mince pies, sign up for a special class on the mats with wartime aircraft hanging above. The next classes take place on Monday 11 and 18 December at 7pm and cost £5 per session.
Always fascinating, the 'Speaker Series' of talks also continues with historian Paul Beaver discussing the exploits of the extraordinary pilot Eric 'Winkle' Brown, on Saturday 16 December at 11.30am. Tickets cost £5.
Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Residents' Services, said: "Alongside the bunker's regular mix of informative talks and fascinating tours, there's a flurry of activities lined up to get you in the Christmas mood, in one of the most unique locations in London.
"From sun salutations under a Spitfire, to Christmas crafts for kids in the stunning visitor centre and some lovely concerts scheduled there's plenty for everyone get involved with and enjoy.
"And if that isn't incentive enough, mince pies and mulled wine have been added to the Daisy Café's already tempting menu and will be available throughout December."
