Ready, Set, Read!

Monday 10 July 2023: Hillingdon Council is inviting children aged four to 11-years old to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge. This year's theme, Ready, Set, Read! celebrates sports, games and pastimes, and children can join in now.

Registering is easy, simply visit your local library to sign up. Once registered, you will be given a folder to record your reading journey. To complete the challenge, you will need to borrow books at least four times during the summer holidays. You can claim rewards, including stickers, a bookmark, door hanger, certificate and a medal as you progress.

All library books count towards the challenge, so you can enjoy picture books, storybooks, joke books, poetry books, and books full of facts. Audiobooks are included too, so if you prefer listening to library books, you won't miss out.

Cllr Eddie Lavery, Cabinet Member for Residents' Services, said: "In the last year, our libraries have hosted a wonderful variety of classes, activities and events.

"The Summer Reading Challenge is always one of our most popular activities for young people. Not only is it a great, free way to keep children entertained during the long summer holidays, but it could also help pave the way for a lifelong love of reading."

Libraries across the borough will be hosting activities and events throughout the summer. Places may be limited, so book early.

Staying with this year's theme of sports and hobbies, the council is inviting children aged four to 11 and their families to its free Summer Games on Thursday 17 August, from 10am to 4pm, at the Great Barn, Manor Farm, Ruislip. The summer festivities will include craft activities, story time sessions, a mini circuits challenge in association with Better Leisure, recycled bottle bowling and a treasure hunt.
