Sign up for Hillingdon's Zero Waste Challenge
Tuesday 28 March 2023: Hillingdon Council is asking residents to waste less, save money and help to create a cleaner, greener planet for future generations, by signing up to its next Zero Waste Challenge, which will run from Monday 3 to Sunday 30 April.
Everyone who completes it will be automatically entered into a prize draw for a chance to win a gift set of reusable everyday items.
Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Residents' Services, said: "We are one of the only London boroughs to offer people free, weekly recycling, food waste and garden waste collections to help support sustainable living.
"Our Zero Waste Challenge is another way in which we are supporting residents to make a positive impact on the environment by reducing their waste.
"I encourage Hillingdon residents to give it a go to consider the effects of climate change, find out more about the many ways they can reduce their waste, recycle and reuse and make a difference."
At the start of the challenge, participants will need to log a normal week's waste. They will then continue to record their waste amount each week to measure how much they reduce it across the month.
The council will share hints and tips via email throughout the challenge on how participants can reduce their household waste and take a fresh look at their shopping and recycling habits.
The Zero Waste Challenge isn't about being perfect, it's about making changes, big and small, to get as close to zero waste as possible. The five Rs of achieving zero waste can help to better understand what is needed and how best to dispose of waste: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot*.
