Approved suffixes for new street and building names
All names should end with a terminal word or suffix from the following list which indicates the nature of the development.
All new street names should end with one of the following suffixes:
- Avenue - for a residential road
- Crescent - for a crescent-shaped road only
- Close - for a cul-de-sac only
- Circus - for a large roundabout
- Dene - only for exceptional use in appropriate locations
- Drive - for a residential road
- Gardens - for a residential road (subject to there being no confusion with any local open space)
- Grove - for a residential road
- Hill - for a hillside road only
- Lane - for any short road or access-way
- Mead - only for exceptional use in appropriate locations
- Mews - for a short road at the rear of, and parallel to, a terrace of buildings
- Place - for any short road or access-way
- Rise - for a hillside road only
- Row - for a terrace of buildings (but not as a subsidiary name)
- Road - for any thoroughfare
- Street - for any thoroughfare
- Square - for a square only
- Terrace - for a terrace of buildings (but not as a subsidiary name)
- Vale - only for exceptional use in appropriate locations
- Way - for a major road
- Wharf - only for exceptional use in appropriate locations
Unacceptable suffixes for streets
- Court
- Cross
- End
- Gate
- Meadow
- Park
- Side
- View
- Walk
All names for new pedestrian-only routes should end with one of the following suffixes:
- Path
- Walk
All new building names should end with one of the following suffixes:
- Apartments - residential only
- Buildings - business or residential
- Court - residential only
- Heights - high block, business or residential
- House - business or residential
- Lodge - residential only
- Mansions - residential only
- Point - high block, residential only
- Studios - mixed business/residential only
- Tower - high block, business or residential
